How to Approach Recovery After Addiction and Depression

There is no question at this point that drug and alcohol addiction is becoming a more and more concerning issue in this country, one of which borders on being a very problematic and distressing issue.  Sadly, addiction and depression or other mental health problems often go hand in hand, and studies now show that drug and alcohol abuse causes the vast majority of mental issues and difficulties that people who suffer from both addiction and depression face.

Some Concerning Statistics About Addiction and Depression

All in all, substance abuse is a much more concerning problem than most people think, only because it has not gotten sufficient media coverage by any means at all.  For some of the more concerning statistics regarding it, consider the following when it comes to college students, addiction, and depression:

  •  When the demographics of those who abuse drugs and alcohol is more closely and seriously examined, it has been found that the greatest problems with drug addiction occur with college students.  For a look at this, it was found that about forty percent of college students between the age of eighteen and twenty-two engaged in binge drinking in a one-month period before the survey being done.  This percentile is compared to only thirteen percent of all individuals interviewed who were in the same age group but who were not in college.  This statistic is only one, but it does go to show just how quickly the problem is growing. It does show how much more likely college students are to engage in dangerous substance abuse habits than non-college student young adults are to do the same.
  • When it comes to experiencing adverse effects of alcohol abuse, the young adult college student demographic is in the forefront again.  For example, it was found that no less than ninety-seven thousand college students between the ages of 18 and 24 experienced an alcohol-related sexual assault or date rape of some kind in 2014.  When this is explored further, it is found that about 20 percent of college students currently meet the criteria for having an alcohol abuse habit, which is double the nationwide average for alcoholism criteria amongst the general populace.  Studies also show that about one out of four college students admit that their academic success suffers every semester because of drinking.  They miss class, fall behind in class, fail exams, and receive lower grades overall because they keep drinking and abusing alcohol in some way.  College life has always been kind of correlated to a party lifestyle, but the last decade has shown that this “age-old tradition” has gotten completely out of hand.

What are the Signs of Depression?

What are the signs of depression and how do they relate to addiction?  When a person is considering the signs and symptoms of a depressed person, they need to look for apathetic and overall lifeless and shiftless attitudes. Depression does not necessarily manifest as grief or sadness.  Being inactive, not talking as much, seeming far off and distant, not being interested in activities and hobbies, these are all signs of depression too and will need to be adequately addressed.  All in all, when a person suffers from an addiction, or when a person suffers from depression, the two will often go hand-in-hand and will cause pretty serious problems.

The key to addressing addiction and depression problems is with rehabilitation.  For more information, contact A Forever Recovery today at our toll-free number.
