How Does an Accidental Drug Overdose Happen?

How does an accidental drug overdose happen?  An overdose occurs when an addict takes more drugs or alcohol than their body is accustomed too, and the body seizes up and suffers as a result of that.  This is the genuine hardship and difficulty of an overdose.  It often, but not always, leads to death.

Statistics on Accidental Drug Overdoses in the United States

The grim truth of the matter is that overdoses are becoming more and more common as the years go by, with each new year bringing higher and higher overdose statistics across the boards.  For some of the facts and data on this problem:

  • Prescription drugs surprisingly enough take the lead now. They are touted as being safe and beneficial to the health of those who take them yet more Americans die from prescription drugs than any other drug in the nation.
  • From the years 2001 to 2013, there was a 2.5-fold increase in the total number of deaths from prescription drugs, all of which were overdoses.  In the year 2010, over twenty-two thousand Americans died from prescription drug overdoses, more than triple the deaths caused by heroin overdoses too.
  • Because so many Americans are now abusing pain reliever drugs, there has also been a severe spike in heroin abuse statistics in the United States too.  From the year 2001 to the year 2013, there was a five-fold increase in the total number of deaths from lethal heroin overdoses.
  • The heroin problem had diminished in the United States at the turn of the century.  However, following a three-hundred percent increase in the production of opiate pain relievers between the years of 2001 and 2005 however, heroin abuse statistics, including heroin overdose deaths, has now soared to unprecedented levels in this country.

Now, that is just a small glimpse at the sheer level of horror that has struck the United States because of drug and alcohol addiction and accidental drug overdoses.  The sad truth of the matter is that overdoses are getting more and more frequent each passing month.

Addressing the Problem Addiction Rehab

The best way to solve addiction problems is with the help of an inpatient drug and alcohol addiction treatment center.  These treatment centers offer the best services out there, and such services are truly engaging and helpful for those who are addicted.

Overdose and death can all be prevented with the help of rehabilitation.  A treatment center offers freedom and safety from overdose by providing three major services to those who need them:

  1. Detox:  Detox is the way an addict can free themselves of the chemical and the physiological effects of drug and alcohol addiction.  This gets them off of their physical dependence and chemical reliance to the substance, so they no longer crave it physically.
  2. Rehab:  This step addresses the mental effects of drug and alcohol addiction.  This takes away the psychological impulses to use and abuse drugs and alcohol.
  3. Aftercare:  This step addresses maintaining recovery once.  This is an outpatient program that one follows up with and continues to go to ensure that one’s recovery is permanent.

All in all, these approaches are the best of the best when it comes to winning the battle against addiction and preventing overdose.
