Why Students will Never Succeed with Marijuana Use

Different types of problems and issues come and go in this country, some of which are much more dangerous and impacting than others. One problem that has been consistently getting worse as the years go by has been that of drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Truly, drug and alcohol addiction has played a big part in the missed successes that people have missed out on because of this. Marijuana use, in particular, has been the downfall of many students in past years as well as in these present days.

Academics and Substance Abuse

This weighs heavily on the academic side of things in the United States, with teenagers and college-age students being the most likely demographic to use and abuse drugs and alcohol in this country. Sadly, college students are struggling a lot and so are high school students, and it has a lot to do with drug and alcohol abuse and addiction creating big problems in this country, and with young adults and teens being targeted for substance abuse more so than any other demographic.

A new study done in the Netherlands has recently added to our constant debates about marijuana use in this nation. Marijuana use constantly gets discussed and talked about left and right, and marijuana is a big part of the core of debates about drugs and their true effects in general. The acceptance of marijuana use has without a doubt been gaining ground in this country, with more and more people finding themselves at a loss for what to do about it. Just since the turn of the century, marijuana has been legalized in several states, and medical marijuana has been made available in over a dozen more.

There’s no doubt that marijuana use is becoming more accepted, but we have to ask ourselves the question if that is right or not, and the Netherlands may have just shined some light on this topic for us.

Marijuana Use and Abuse

Marijuana abuse is definitely a difficulty, and the Netherlands recently did a study as to how it affects students specifically. Marijuana addiction and marijuana drug treatment are very real things there. Numerous studies have already shown that the use and abuse of marijuana impairs one’s short-term learning ability. There is no doubt about that. The National Survey on Drug Use and Health in tandem with the National Institute on Drug Abuse have published many findings on those points.

Researchers at the Maastricht University in the Netherlands have gone a step further in this arena. They analyzed grades of students who could not access marijuana, as the city of Maastricht has since 2011 cut down seriously on marijuana sales.

In 2011, Maastricht City banned the sale of marijuana completely for people who did not have a Dutch, German, or Belgian passport. Then, in 2016 and 2017, the Maastricht University studied the average grades of students from countries not in the three above (about half of their student body and about eight thousand students in all).

Since half of the student body of Maastricht University is not from the Netherlands, Germany, or Belgium, it was quite the project. The comparison was studying the average grades of Maastricht University foreign students before 2011 and after 2011. Every year since legal sales of marijuana was banned for foreign students at Maastricht University, their grades have been better than in years when marijuana was legally obtainable.
