Spouses of Addicts: Why You Also Need a Recovery Plan

What a lot of people don’t realize is that drug addiction is a major and impacting crisis and that it has to do a lot with a lot more people than one originally might think.  This is a very true factor and one that is often not thought with.  However, it absolutely does need to be thought with for fear of the problem getting worse and worse as the years go by.  Without a doubt, this is an ongoing issue, to say the least, and one that will probably just get worse and worse with no clear sign or indication of it getting any better any time soon.

Substance abuse and general drug and alcohol addiction go on and on with no clear sign of letting up in this country, and the negative impact of this is that more and more individuals ultimately become addicted and those individuals then affect other people who are close to them.  Realistically, for every addict in this country, there are about five or six people who are in some way adversely affected by that addict on a regular basis.

Why the Family Members and Loved Ones of Addicts Need Help Too

The truth is that crisis after crisis has presented itself in the form of drug and alcohol abuse and addiction.  This is a big problem and there are a lot of different aspects to it.  However, nothing quite shows the devastating effects of drugs and alcohol like the sheer number of Americans who are in some way affected by these habits and crisis issues. By this, it is not just meant those who actually are abusing drugs and alcohol, but it is instead meant the family members and loved ones who are also affected.  They get hit hard.  Truth be told, studies show that about one out of every 10 Americans in this country knows someone who is addicted to drugs or alcohol, and one out of every five Americans has at some point in their life been adversely affected by somebody who was addicted.

This is not just for drug addiction either.  In fact, alcoholics often have a more negative effect on their family members and loved ones than drug users do.  For the data on it, about fifteen million Americans have an alcohol abuse problem.  Whether they drink daily or whether they binge, they still definitely have an alcohol problem of one kind or another. For them, their alcohol use and abuse have resulted in a criminal arrest, termination from their job, or family disruption such as divorce or something similar to that. It is important to realize that alcohol is a drug, it has always been a drug, and it always will be a drug too. In the year of 2005, 2.5 million Americans received treatment for alcohol addiction of one kind or another, as it is most definitely an addictive and problematic concern, to say the least.

Drug and alcohol addiction in a lot of ways negatively impacts the family members, spouses, and loved ones of addicts just as much as the addicts.  It is a different kind of suffering certainly, but it most definitely is a suffering, to say the least.  This is a problem for them and it is a very present worry and concern.  They are constantly terrified that their spouse or loved one will die as a result of addiction.  That is the grim truth of the matter.  Because of this, such spouses and family members are all but mentally incapacitated all because of having an addict in the family.

The way out of this crisis is to get help from a support group that offers counseling and therapy and group support for those who have an addict closely connected in their lives.  This is immensely helpful for the spouses of addicts.  They feel the effects of the most and that goes without saying.  For the spouses of an addict, support should be sought and support should be obtained so that spouse can continue to function, live a happy life, and be able to help their addicted lover.
