Recovery Month:  Promoting and Celebrating the Benefits of Addiction Treatment

What is Recovery Month? It is a national event that seeks to increase awareness about substance abuse. It is also an opportunity to celebrate with those who are succeeding in recovery. We Americans acknowledge the milestones achieved by those in recovery from heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, cancer, and other health conditions. So, recovery from addiction should also a notable achievement to recognize and celebrate.

Once a year, SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) sponsors National Recovery Month. This year’s theme is “Join the Voices for Recovery: Invest in Health, Home, Purpose, and Community.” The theme highlights and explores how leadership, community, integrated care, and a sense of purpose contribute to recovery. This includes recovery from addiction and mental health disorders. It is also an opportunity for recovering addicts to share their successes. In this way, they inspire others to seek treatment for their addictions.

How You Can Join the Celebration and Support the Cause

National Recovery Month is in its 29th year. During those years, thousands of treatment, prevention, and recovery programs and facilities across the nation have participated in the events. Also, thousands of individuals and community groups have shared some of their time as well.

You can be a part of this worthwhile event. SAMHSA provides a Recovery Month Toolkit that will help you get started. You will also find a calendar of events in your area if you’d like to attend or volunteer.

What is recovery month? Since its inception in 1989, National Recovery Month has raised awareness about substance abuse and mental health disorders. It has also inspired many people to join their efforts. The original name, “Treatment Works Month” changed to “National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month” in 1998. In 2011, the name was changed to National Recovery Month. At this time it expanded to include all aspects of behavioral health.

Today, more than two hundred local, state, and federal government agencies comprise the Recovery Month Planning Partners’ Group. The group also includes associations that are affiliated with treatment, prevention, and recovery of mental and substance use disorders.

A Forever Recovery is Proud to Participate in Recovery Month

At A Forever Recovery, we are pleased to be a part of this national observance. However, we also celebrate our clients’ success during our graduation ceremonies. Also, we strive to reach out to others who are struggling with addiction.

Our goal at AFR is to spread awareness about the different kinds of treatment programs available for addiction recovery. We have witnessed the transformation of thousands of our clients as they participate in our program and learn the skills for becoming contributing members of society once again. With our help, many individuals are now enjoying a substance-free lifestyle, and we are proud to be a part of their success stories.

Through the years, A Forever Recovery has sponsored or participated in many events that are held in various locations to spread education and awareness about addiction and treatment. Prevention is our primary goal, but if all efforts fail and someone needs help for substance abuse, our program is there for just that purpose.
